Today it's a city of roughly 39,000 people with a walkable downtown and a steady mix of established subdivisions and newer construction. Why the gap? The 43026 ZIP code covers a lot more ground than the city does. It stretches into parts of Columbus and several surrounding townships, and its population is well over 60,000 compared with fewer than 40,000 inside Hilliard itself. So a home with a Hilliard mailing address isn't always in the City of Hilliard, and the ZIP-wide numbers blend in plenty of homes outside the city. In the most recent Census survey, the median value of owner-occupied homes in Hilliard was $385,100.
Prices have eased compared with this time last year. Even so, well-priced homes can still go under contract quickly, so it pays to be ready to move.
Location is a big part of Hilliard's appeal. I-270 runs along the east side of the city, so downtown Columbus is roughly a 20-minute drive and John Glenn Columbus International Airport is about 30 minutes away.
Hilliard has the conveniences of a larger suburb, but Old Hilliard still feels like a small railroad town, and the paved Heritage Rail Trail starts right downtown and runs 6.1 miles north toward Plain City.
The city keeps adding to what it offers residents, too. The Well, Hilliard's new recreation and wellness center on Cosgray Road, opened in September 2025 with a leisure pool and an Ohio State Wexner Medical Center satellite clinic on site.
The local job base helps too. Advanced Drainage Systems is headquartered in Hilliard, and Forsee Power opened its North American headquarters and battery plant on Lyman Drive in 2024. Put those together and you get a suburb that works for a lot of different buyers, whether you want to walk to dinner or just want a quick hop onto I-270.
Hilliard's first big growth spurt came after the city connected to Columbus water and sewer in the 1960s, and another followed once I-270 was finished in the early 1970s. The population then more than tripled between 1990 and 2020, so a large share of the city's homes are in subdivisions built over the last few decades.
Closer to downtown, Old Hilliard has some of the oldest homes in the city within walking distance of Main Street. On the edges of town, newer construction is still going up.
Price-wise, there's a wide spread on either side of the median. Smaller and older homes give buyers an entry point below the city median, while larger homes push the top end considerably higher.

Heritage Lakes sits next to Heritage Golf Club, and some homes back right up to the course. Homes here tend to list well above the city median, so it's a good fit if you want more space and a golf course setting.
One of the newer communities in Hilliard, Carr Farms sits on about 80 acres off Leppert Road, north of Davidson Road. New townhomes and single-family homes are being sold there now, so it's worth a look if you want something recently built.
A lot of homes with a Hilliard mailing address are actually in Brown Township or Norwich Township rather than the city. Taxes and some services depend on the actual jurisdiction, so it's worth checking early.
Old Hilliard has become a real destination for going out. Crooked Can Brewing Company shares a building on Center Street with Center Street Market, a food hall with a range of vendors, so it's easy to grab a beer and pick whatever you're in the mood for.
Firefly Winery opened on Franklin Street in October 2024, a short walk from Main. Downtown also has a designated outdoor refreshment area, open daily from noon to 9 p.m., so you can carry a drink between spots on a summer evening.
Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park is the big one, spanning 130 acres. It includes an inclusive playground and the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, which has a lazy river and a slide pool.
If you want something quieter, a bridle trail runs alongside part of the Heritage Rail Trail, and Heritage Trail Metro Park adds 87 acres plus a fenced dog park. Back downtown, Hilliard's Station Park hosts Celebration at the Station, a free outdoor concert series on Thursday evenings through the summer.
The Hilliard Historical Village in Weaver Park is a small collection of historic buildings, including a log cabin, a schoolhouse, a covered bridge and a red C&O caboose.
Downtown, First Responders Park honors first responders with granite name walls and a sculpture made from World Trade Center steel. It was restored and rededicated in September 2025.
Mill Run Square, near I-270 on the east side of the city, is home to stores including Floor & Decor and Arhaus. The shops and restaurants of nearby Dublin and Upper Arlington are close by too.
The Fourth of July is a big deal in Hilliard. The day starts with a morning parade from the fairgrounds through downtown and wraps up with Freedom Fest and fireworks at Municipal Park.
The Franklin County Fair is held at the fairgrounds in Hilliard every July. In December, the city hosts a tree lighting downtown with carriage rides.
Most of Hilliard is served by Hilliard City Schools, whose boundaries reach well past city limits into neighboring communities and townships. The district operates 22 schools, including 14 elementary schools and two sixth-grade buildings, and enrolls more than 16,000 students.
It also runs an Innovation Campus with two buildings, the Innovative Learning Center on Cemetery Road and the Innovative Learning Hub on Main Street, which serve students from across the district.
School district lines don't always follow city lines, though. Some subdivisions in the area are assigned to neighboring districts, including Columbus City Schools and Dublin City Schools, so check the district's subdivision attendance list for any home you're considering.

Confirm the jurisdiction: Because 43026 covers so much ground, a home listed as Hilliard could sit inside the city or outside it. That affects the taxes you pay and which school district serves the property, and your agent can confirm it before you write an offer.
Know the income tax setup: The City of Hilliard has a 2.5% income tax, and residents get full credit, up to 2.5%, for tax paid to the city where they work. If you live in a township with a Hilliard address, the rules may differ, so ask before you assume.
